I have four daughters one being a 17 month old baby and i have never heard of giving a 5month old baby whole milk. They can have it in food at 6 months, sauces, cereal and such like but not to drink until they are 12 months old. They still need all the nutrients that formula gives them. Who told you to give your baby whole milk???

Please don't give it as baby's main drink - it does not have all the nutrition, vitamins and minerals that babies need at this age ( milk is still their main source of nutrition at this age, even if they are on solid foods ). It's ok to use as an ingredient in food - mixed with cereal or in a sauce, but if you have any family history of allergies, you might be better off waiting until after 6 months to start introducing it.

My midwife told me that you should not start a baby on whole milk until they are 12 months old.

well for a start there little stomachs can no cope with it Giving cows' milk as a main drink before 12 months of age has been linked with an increased risk of developing iron deficiency and anaemia.

I was always told not to give kids 'proper' milk until they had reached the first birthday.

a child can't handle cows milk until about 12 months, it doesn't have the right amount of nutrients they need in that first year.give him formula or breastmilk.

don't give your child till 12 months unless with food such as weetabix do not give as a drink as it will upset your little ones tummy they can't cope with it until there a year old your child will likely have severe diarriah and possible vomiting
