If it's a "T" series, try the volume buttons at the top of the keyboard. There's a mute, up and down.
If not a T series, try a to increse the volume.
Also try with a set of headphones.
If this fails, see if the driver for the sound card is loaded (right click My Computer, Manage, Device Manager). You can get the driver from Lenovo now.

Some possible causes, in order of severity, from minor to major:
1) Audio is disabled in the software. Assuming you're running some flavor of Windows, go to Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / Volume tab.
2) Low-tech problem with headphone jack. Most headphone jacks are set up so the speakers disengage when you plug in headphones. The little 1/8" jacks can sometimes get stuck, or the contacts corroded. Try plugging in a headphone plug and then remove it. Try this several times and see if the sound comes back on.
3) Physical volume control turned all the way down. Some laptops have a wheel, button or dial that controls volume. Look around the edges of the computer (or better, download the manual off the ThinkPad / Lenovo website) and see if you've got an external control that needs to be turned up.
4) Built in sound card is fried. With a laptop this will often require a main board replacement.
Try them in order from 1 to 4, and see if any of this helps. Good luck, and best to you.
