Do you think in some ways that black people in general are still slaves? I know some of you are either mad that I said this or think I'm stupid for saying this, but hear me out. Sure, we have a lot more opportunities in life and some black people have taken advantage of it. But on a large scale there are many black people who are not in positions that really matter. Instead, black people are towards the entertainment industry to be successful. We admire people who are either hip-hop artists who rap about vain and materialistic crap, but when someone like Barack Obama comes along, we say he is not black enough. Yet many say that Clinton is the first black president. Many people do not like Bush, but he has done a lot more for black people than Clinton ever has. The highest position that Clinton ever gave to a black person was a sectary job. (you know the one that takes notes) We are not as successful as we could be, because of this mentally. What do you think?

To quote I think Abraham Lincoln: There is no such thing as freedom. The only freedom that exists is the freedom to choose your own chains.
I love that quote for it is quite true for every human on the face of this earth. We decide who we are slaves to. Money, governments, armies, bosses, and occationally our pet cat.

You raise some good points.
Being black myself (actually, I'm a shade of brown, but that's for another discussion), I think that there are certainly more opportunities in today's American that in a previous day and age. With that being said, I feel that the main problem plaguing today's African-American youth is a crippling lack of good education for kids which translates into low income and serves to propagate the vicious cycle of poverty, abuse, etc that our people have been victims of since slavery ended.

So In that sense, we are still slaves.

Also, respectfully I'd like to add that I don't think that George W. Bush's appointment of African Americans to cabinet positions necessarily constitutes doing "a lot" for black people in general.

I, a Black woman, work at restaurant. It consists of blacks who don't want to do for themselves. All a lot of them want to do is take drugs, have babies they can't afford, drop out of school, have fatherless kids, babies as babies and be devoid of knowledge.
These people aren't even aware that Patti LaBelle, Madonna and Rosa Parks share the same middle name: Louise.
The subjects. with which my coworker are most familiar are welfare and jail.
I've worked with people who have 4 generations within 50 years. Imagine being 13 and having a grandmother who can't tell you about Emmitt Till first hand because she's too young.

I'm gonna receive many thumbs-down for this answer, but here goes.

The black people who are involved in the subculture you mentioned have enslaved themselves. They have created a self-defeating mentality; one must be involved in endeavors that do not really amount to much but allow one to pose and gesticulate menacingly, but if one becomes involved in serious endeavors, one is declared as "not being black enough."

The white people who are ensuring black people the freedom to rap and wear bling and "keep it real" are laughing all the way to the bank.

i hear you, i believe in general the world still views blacks as an undesired sub human race, the united states will allow blacks to some roles as to seem that they view them as equals, behind closed doors they dont, our government would even go so far as to put one as president, will it happen this time around not likely due to the large amount of americans that would never allow it, american blacks should concentrate theyr efforts on strong families, theyr are way to many broken black homes in america
