They don't get a true loss. There is a separate column in the standings for overtime losses. For example, the current Buffalo Sabres record is 38-15-4. That's 38 wins, 15, losses, and 4 overtime losses. Overtime losses are separate because they still earn the team 1 point.

If a team loses in overtime or a shootout, the team gets one point. They do get a loss as well.

Wins-Losses-Overtime/Shootout Losses
Doesn't go in loss, but in the 3rd number.
So if you got 10 wins, 15 losses, 5 over time losses, and 3 shoot out losses, your record is 10-15-8.

they get an overtime loss the scoring goes W-L-OL (Win, Loss, Overtime loss)
a team gets 2 points for a win
0 for a loss
1 for an Overtime loss
so it looks like 0-0-1
