It all depends on what you consider epic.
If social conciense and love for your country and
and fellow man is your thing see Ghandi,Braveheart.
If you like science-fiction with a contempory theme see The Star Wars saga (especially, "Revenge of the Sith")
Battle Star Galatica with Edward James Olmos
The Orgininal Star Trex ( I know the special effects are comical, but the writing and acting is intense)
Epics show the grand scale of the human experience. Its joy, its pain. Its reverence, and
its leaning for evil. If you are afraid of losing three or four hours, get references as to what epics would be worth your time.
As with anything else what you dis-like and like is entirely up to you.

I was a little dissappointed when I saw it, it was just not as epically funny as I expected. You should just rent it.
