I went to the ER because my colitis was flaring up. The Dr. ordered Abdominal X-Rays. During the X-rays I was not given any shielding to protect my groin. The last picture taken the camera was positioned right infront of my groin while I was lying on my back.

Why would they take a picture of my groin area? Is that part of the abdominal scan or was it unecessary? Also would these X-rays make me infertile?

YES & NO.

The Nazi ,during the 2nd.World war used X-rays in very high dosage and repeated prolonged time exposure to sterilise the prisonners of war .

Medical Science has gone a long way to improve 1. the dosage. 2.the duration of exposure so much so that there is absolutely no danger of sterilisation during the course of a routine x-ray examination of a patient. So there is no need for shielding ,which may hide the necessary views.

With the camera perpendicular over your groin there is a better view of your lower abdomen and pelvis regions. So it was important for a complete view of your abdomen.

Of course ,if you are still in doubt, you should consult your doctor for further management.

Best Wishes.

If you can be pregnant or if you have infertility problems I reccomend to follow this method http://pregnancy.toptips.org

Many factors can cause a couple trouble in conceiving a baby, I'll list a few of the most common ones in women:
Anorexia or other dietary dysfunctions
Lacking amounts of FSH and LH are produced, so ovaries aren't as functional as they could be, and so not many eggs are produced
Stress, causing periods to become irregular
Medications such as cancer treatments, antidepressants, hormone therapy, pain killers, and antipsychotic drugs can all cause temporary infertility.

With the method that I posted above you will be able to get pregnant!

You don't use the shield if it's going to obstruct the region that you are trying to see. X-ray doesn't have nearly enough dosage to do much harm. Shields are used because over the life time the effects of exposure to radiation is cummulative and they are trying to decrease the overall exposure of x-ray during lifetime..not just 1 shot.

These days with high frequency machines(which all hospitals use these days) you'll be exposed to more radiation standing out in the sun than a few spot x-rays...

Well, xrays are high powered rays, sometimes damaging, changing, or mutating DNA. X-rays aren't suggested to be used often, but it is recommended to help cure you. If the X-ray was screened on you for a long time, you might notice some things that might not be normal, but if it was a quick shot, then I think you're going to be fine.

You have nothing to worry about. In order for there to be even slight blood changes (which is where radiation begins to Effect the body) you would have to receive about 200 Sieverts (1 Sv = 1 J/kg). Medical X-rays are very low dose and you only get them a couple times a year at the most.

Most Xray equipment now uses very low doses of radiation - they are unlikely to cause problems with a single exposure. There are still many machines in use that use higher doses of radiation, and for those it is advisable to wear a lead apron to protect the testes.

Xray damage is cumulative; if you were undergoing multiple Xrays, then you should be protected.

- maybe if he'd had had gotten a billion x-rays in 5 seconds then maybe, but with just a 1, not so much. - no he wouldn't be.

YOu would need to get xrays everyday at that level to cause infertility.
One time will not damage you.
The large intestine and colon/rectum sit low in your pelvis. They were looking at that part of the bowel. I am surprised they xrayed instead of doing a colonoscopy.
You will be fine.
