Volunteerism, Protestant Work Ethic, Spirit of Capitalism.
Read Max Weber. It's pretty obvious once you pick his books up.
If I am plentiful and I can give unto others to make myself more plentiful because I would be investing in someone else's industry, then my own success brings about another's improved standard of living and greater happiness.

There's something about us humans. We like helping other people. When you're generous and kind to others, it releases a sense of self-satisfaction. When you invest your life into others, you truly find yourself. You can go to bed at night knowing that you've made a difference in this world, one person at a time. Remember, happiness is based on happenings. When your life is filled with good and noble happenings, you'll have a life a happiness. Actually you'll have something better, you'll have real joy. Happiness is like a honey-bun, but joy is like owning the bakery that makes honey-buns.

A popular psychiatrist and renowned puplic speaker (Dr. Murry Banks, try Google) once said:
Happiness is not a station you arrive at , but the manner of travelling. In other words: happiness - or unhappiness - depends on the way you handle your day-to-day affairs and relationships.
Personally I found that the greatest happiness results from making others happy.
Generosity is the perfect tool to that end.

People live happy lives when they live peaceful lives. In order to live a peaceful life, one must live simply, accepting only that which is necessary for maintenance of the self. Everything above that should be given to charity. A peaceful life also means avoiding harshness, judgement, and criticism, in thought or speech. When we are generous in our praise, but reluctant in our ridicule, we set an example of peace. Doing no violence in behavior or speech to human or animal is also peaceful and generous in compassion and love. Seeing all living beings equally, and being ready to offer respects to everyone, is generous in heart. Being humble and kind, accepting no offense, and avoiding envy, is generous in mind. Remaining optimistic and helpful, forgiving, and reassuring, is generous in spirit.
