why do we have to purchase a domain name?

if nobody owns the internet, why do we have to purchase domain names and stuff like that.

what would a small time person need to do to sell domain names? Im guessing that the first step to selling domain names, is to buy a domain name in order to set up the website.

You dont! A domain name is simply a name that directs people to where your site is stored. You have to pay a yearly fee to register one, but you dont NEED one! When you create a website, you can simply use the address of the place where your website is stored.

Nobody forces you to have a domain name, by the way. You can use the numbered IP address just fine...try to have people remember that! No way, eh?
