1. Because it is useful for the media to keep the story going on and because there is no-one that would not be interested in the story of a child with such a fate. People are trying to seem nice and considerate.
2. It depends on how this technology is going to be used, and how knowledge about it is going to be shared among people, so that all of them have the ability to use it. Computers already do a lot of things these days, but on the one hand there are people who do not know what Internet is and on the other hand a lot of people have found work as computer engineers, hardware constructors (well, multinational companies and the way they treat workers is another matter) etc. Of course, computer knowledge gets obsolete extremely fast.
