1. How often do you change the water in your beta fish's bowl/tank? How much of it?

2. How often do you feed your beta fish the pellets? How many at a time?

I want to keep my fish alive as long as possible. Any experience or advice would be helpful.

If it matters, he is a male.

Here is a complete guide to Betta's.

This is what you would need for a Betta:
1. A bowl that is about a gallon of water
2. Rocks for the bottom (a 2lb bag is fine)
3. A Plant that the Betta can rub on and hide in
4. Water conditioner for Betta's
5. Betta food (flakes or pellets)
6. A small net
7. The Betta of your choice

Now the Steps to setting up the Betta Bowl:

1. You want to wash the rocks with hot water to get any loose coloring off of the rocks.
2. Put the rocks in the bottom of the bowl
3. Place the plant in the rocks
4. Fill the bowl with room temp water
5. Add Water conditioner and Let sit for 15 Min's
6. Add your Betta

Care for the Betta:
1. Feed your Betta once a day just a few flakes or 2 to 3 Pellets
2. Change the water once a week. Take some of the water from his bowl and put it in the container he came in. Take the fish net and catch your Betta and place him in the cup. Then just follow the directions on setting up the bowl for the Betta.

With the proper care Betta's can live for several years!

I keep a number of betta in 2 quart bowls and change the water 2 times a week

I rarely feed the pellets, but when I do I use 3-4 per feeding

The best way to insure your betta lives a long life is with clean water, a reasonable temperature and a good variety of foods. By doing this you offer him his best chance at good health and therefore long life.

i keep bettas in 2 1/2 gallon tanks i change most of the water weekly. i do a gravel vacuum and empty about 80% of the water -- leave him just enough he can scoot around in for a bit. when you do this wipe down the inside of the tank with paper towels before draining and wash off your ornaments with hot water -- unless you use live plants. you can wipe down the leaves with your papertowels. and put them in the bucket with your fresh water (i keep a constant bucket of room temp water ready for changes -- its actually not a bucket but a small covered garbage can so people think i am cleaner than i am).

i feed my fish pellets 4 days and frozen bloodworms 3 days. about 3 each meal two meals a day. some only eat two. always remove any uneaten food.

temperature is very important. keep him away from drafty windows. they prefer temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. if you are in the lower 70s thats ok -- they will get moody below that.

they like having things to interact with. i usually get them silk plants that reach the top of the water. a leaf that hits the top is perfect for bubble nest making. they are territorial and i think they do better with stuff they can claim as territory -- like a plant or a cave or something.

i'd say clean the bowl once or twice a week and do a 15 percent water change. try to make sure the new water is the same temperature. i'd feed him once a day with 3 or 4 pellets. if you feed him too much a lot might just fall to the bottom and make his bowl dirty.

you should change your beta's tank at least twice a week [every 3 or 4 days] and you should give him around 3 or 4 pellets per day.
