I have a 5 year old and I can tell you right now I would be reallly mad. Instead of playing a tasteless joke on him that had him crying for two hours, you could of gone to C. Cheese and been home in time to watch the end of the game. You could have had a smiling, happy child instead of a crying one. That was good quality father and son time, huh? Are you an idiot? Feel for your wife and son.If you found that funny I would hate to know what you find sad.

Look, I know you think your wife is wrong, but she isn't you are. Now if the kid was 14 yrs old I would of said thats a good one, but a 5 year old doesn't know the maturity of this joke and I am afraid you made a big one. The poor kid cried for two hours, what are you trying to do to the kid? This isn't funny for a 5 yr old, this is incredibly awful for a dad to do this to the kid. Like I said he is too young to understand the humour. Tell you wife you are sorry and that you made a mistake. And for God sake tell your son that daddy didn't realise how upset he would get about the joke and he will promise not to do it again. You are going to have to make it up to your son and this is a duzy so I would go out and buy him a bike or something, pizza and or Mcd's what ever he wants and take him to the store and let him pick out the bike for himself, this will make him feel better. Pease, listen to your wife, the kid was too young for this joke. Take care Heather

Practical Jokes only work on adults. This boy is only 5 their sense of reality is not fully developed. This age still believes in Santa and the Easter Bunny. They think Superman is real. They look to the adults in their life to figure out what is real. You betrayed his trust big time. Good luck earning that back. You need to ask yourself did I do this to avoid having to go to Chuck E Cheese? I'm guessing you were just t2oo lazy to go. And yes it is irritating for adult to go there, but good grief It was his birthday! My kids are 25, 23, and 20. Their childhoods are just a pleasant memory and I'd give anything to have that time back. Shame on you. You owe the kid a trip to Chuck E Cheese.

I'm sorry, but are you stupid? Here's where you missed it:
1) You lied to your young son, who obviously didn't think that your joke was funny. You know how I know that? People don't CRY when something is funny, they laugh!
2) You were selfish in wanting to satisfy your own desire to watch a basketball game instead of putting your son first, on HIS birthday, and taking him to the REAL Chuck E. Cheese's - to show him that you were'nt serious, and to let him have a good time.
3) You lied to your wife, and didn't do what she asked you to do!
My advice? Apologize PROFUSELY to your family, and take EVERYONE out to dinner ON YOU, to Chuck E. Cheese's TONIGHT!!! Get your head out of your butt!

If your 5 year old son knew it was a joke why would he pretend to cry for 2 hours. I don't think 5 years old have the capacity to know a lot of things 'deep down'. They don't think introspectively.
Plus you put your basketball game before his celebration.
Why not have another celebration for him and ask him what he wants to do for his birthday.

It wasn't very nice to do to your son. If you really had taken him to Chuck E Cheese after the prank it would have been okay but you didn't so what was the point. You just lied to him.

If you had actually gone to Chuck E. Cheese afterwards instead of pursuing your own selfish interests, it would be a good prank. As it is you're just a jerk. Did you do *anything* for this kid on his birthday?

Sorry, but I wouldn't either. You should have been more sensitive to your son. And after that, rush home for the game?? How many birthdays does he have in a year, pal? You got some making up to do with your son...
