Sweating is something people do when they are nervous or anxious. Basically, the author of this phrase (truly unknown as the saying is very old) was trying to convey is that being nervous over trivial or small things is a waste of time, when there are bigger things to worry or sweat about.

Kinda like Paris Hilton's feud with Lindsey Lohan, people who worry about this type of trivial matter are obviously wasting their time when we should really be worrying about things like a re-enactment of the military draft!

I have read 2 of the Don't sweat the SMALL stuff books, and basically it means don't worry about the things that you can't change but focus on the ones that you can change. :)
