This is fairly normal. A lot of times this is experienced when you drive hard and are constantly doing hard accelerating and decelerating, heavy hauling, or just driving hard. The job of the cat. convertor is to reduce the CO and NOx emmissions. When there are lots of these to deal with the temp. in the converter rises to meet the demand and has the effect of giving off this odor. If you are having no other issues with the truck and are using quality gas, no worries. Be sure that you run with free flowing air and fuel filters as this can cause unnecessary converter use which can lead to more of the rotten egg crap. Good luck.

This smell is coming from your battery. It is being overcharged by your alternator or another electrical problem therefore frying out your battery. Check your battery because if the sides are bulged out this is what is causing the horrible smell. We get those in our store from time to time. You can get a free electrical test on your charging system after you replace your battery at any auto parts store. They can check the battery outside the vehicle as well as inside the vehicle. You can bring back your Chevy and have them test the whole charging system. You have either a group 75 or most likely a group 78 both side post batteries. Check on it and let me know what the outcome is.

When your engine passes exhaust thru the catalytic converter it changes into sulfuric acid and water in the form of vapors and liquid. The " acid" smell or rotten egg smell, is the sulfuric acid the cat makes....usually after a hard run etc.

the rotten egg smell indicates a rich fuel mixture. a cat. converter can only handle so much unburned carbon. since this vehicle is 15 years old, and your problem only happens once in a while, i would not be that concerned.

It could be that the battery is bad. After running it for a while turn it off and open the hood and see if the battery is making any noise.
