So let's say that the machines win in the Terminator story. What would they do after that? They've eradicated every human and squashed any resistance. Would they form societies? Fight each other? Or would they just shut down awaiting a new command from Skynet?

Make horror films about humans trying to take over the world.

Ironically Skynet was built to defend humans but conveniently in the rise of the machines a terminatrix came back in time, corrupted it with a virus and caused it to attack, creating both a paradox and a contradiction in a single move. The first two movies suggested that Skynet attacked in self-defense when the humans panicked because Skynet became "self-aware" and tried to shut it down.

I will ignore the third movie because largely it sucked and really didn't make any sense with the other two and draw the conclusion that Skynet would most likely decommission the existing terminators to re-use the resources in building a defense against the next most likely source of attack; space.

Or maybe it would just build itself a companion?? Eternity gets lonely...

Grow increasingly suspicious of each other's motives, and then unleash hell on one another, until even all of the cyborgs were dead. Without human ingenuity, the computers could not begin replacing the robots, or repairing themselves, and eventually, Skynet would run out of energy, have some kind of operating system malfunction, and cease to exist.

Since they are self aware they wouldn't just shut down from not having a purpose. They would create their own purpose, they would build their own society. Have you ever seen the Matrix? The city made entirely of machines, the terminators would build their own city of machines continually perfecting themselves.

They would have just eradicated all the humans, then made some kind of Machine-opolis.

maybe they would set their sights on space. Earth can only hold so many machines.

head spaceward?
Considering all military and space technology are at their disposal, Earth is but one planet of many to expand to.
