I've only worked with cartoon looking 2D stuff...

If you want something to move "fluidly" or "normally" instead of jerking around then you need to move it a little bit at first and then increase the movement between frames as it speeds up.. then decrease the movement as it slows down and stops in the new position...

I THINK one of the free Serif programs can make animated GIF pictures.. take a look at my webpage http://www.tom-olsen.com/links.html and you will find the link to Serif.. I use version 10 now but they are giving away version 6 of PhotoPlus.. not sure about the other programs they are giving away.. you will need to register the program to use it (registration is free too!) but I've been using them since version 2 and I prefer them to most other programs...

3D is more complicated, you will need to shrink, rotate, etc. and if you are doing it all by hand it can get quite time consuming (which animation is anyway).. but you may want to search for some "Virtual Reality" programs that can render photo-realistic objects in 3D.. I tried it a few years ago but home computers were way to slow (took 4 hours to render one frame after I defined it) to make more than a 2 minute animation (30 frames per second.. or about 3600 frames).. took me about 2 years to make my one (and only) photo-realistic animation.. it is much better today with faster computers.
