That depends on what you mean by "different".
Old-fashioned names seem to be making a come back.
My husband and I chose old British names for our children.
(I come from a family where to ask for "Paul" meant that there were at least three men of that name at my house. There are three other names that fit that bill, as well. LOL)
Only one of our four children still has a name that is "unique", the others have become trendy. All of them like their names.
Made-up names are an entirely different subject. ; )
Interesting question. Thanks!
Edit: Elphaba~you are always too funny by half!

Personally I think its a trend. My sister was named after the Stevie Wonder song "My Cherie Amour" which was my mothers favorite song of that year. Where I live it seems like there are hundreds of Lisa's who are all in their 30's (apparently that was a popular name back in the seventies in this city) I think the trend now is to give your child the most unique name that you can come up with.
It also could stem from the parent giving the child a name they wish THEY had.
If someone hates their name that much, when they turn 18 they can always change it.

My name is Ameilia and as you can see - it is not the normal spelling. My parents - though divorced - give me different explanations on whether or not that was intentional. I had it misspelled today as "Armelia." I am most likely not going to have kids, but if I do, then I am picking something simple or something not like a name with a common spelling!

People just want their children to have unique names. I remember when everyone was Jason and Jennifer, its kinda cool to hear a name like Bartholomew or Isabella for a change!

Some people want to name their children something that will make them unique.
One thing that's been going on forever is taking a boys name & giving it to girls....that was considered crazy too.

Taylor

I think it's the new drugs they use in childbirth. While still in a drug-raddled haze, the mother suddenly thinks it would be really neat to call her child Celestial Avatar Lotus Blossom Chilly Willy Brian Beef Jerky Orange Johnson - and that's just her son. She gets real creative when it comes to girls.

When we have our first boy he is going to be named after his daddy--nothing out of the ordinary here. And is its a girl I like the name Jeanne --classic, yet uncommon

I was named after my great grandmother and my mom. I have no clue why people think that they have to name their kids Brittany or something. Why not Ella?

It's so annoying. Kids are named things like Taylor, Conner, caden, Jaden, etc...
If you're going to be original and name your kid something crazy, name him IronMan or Axelrod or something like that.
