IT could be a cd got broken inside or some object is inside or the laser is just dirty.there is always the repair shop but if you are a technical person you can open it up carefully.take some methylated spirit and put on a soft cloth.GENTLY wipe the laser part, which a small glass like bulb.
caution do not look directly into the laser.also make sure it is unplugged from the power cable.
good luck.

Ok you don't give more information on what the problem really is. do you have a dvd program installed in your computer like "power Dvd" or "windvd" on any other dvd program. is your computer detecting it as a dvdrom or a cdrom. check your device manager and click on dvd/cd rom it will tell you what is detecting. to get to the device manager just in case you don't know how. on your desktop right click on my computer icon and choose properties then on hardware then on device manger.

hope this helps you out

No, not unless you give some details! Are you using Mac OS X? Linux? Which distribution? Has it ever works? What sort of DVD drive is it? Does it give any errors? Is it detected by the BIOS?
