Depends on what you want out of it.
I have an M3, it is an awesome car, but not the most comfortable all the time. It's stiff, and the power comes on NOW. But, I like it that way, it's what I wanted. I race it occasionally (not a poser, on a track), and I didn't want anything to be compromised. A 335, while fast, is still going to be more for comfort. Easier to drive. Better for a family.
I know many will disagree, but I like my M3, it's why I bought it. You have to decide what you want out of this car.

They are two different cars for two different types of people. The M3 is for the harsher ride and is more serious, and will cost more to maintain. The 335i is very nice but it is more of a boring commuter car. If you want an M3, get it. If you are on the fence, get the 335i.
The cars I have owned over the years are: 1998 M3, 2006 M5, 1987 911 Turbo, 1998 Honda Accord EX and I would have to say that the Honda Accord is boring, but I never worry about it. The 2006 M5 is a car that you always have to worry about. The 1998 M3 was nice but it bottomed out a lot and the maintenance bills were often and very high.

I own an M5 and I've been watching the debate on various sites over the M3 vs. 335i. The twin-turbo is VERY fast, and may even be similar in speed to the M3 at straight-line acceleration (300hp vs. 333 hp). However, the M3 has two big advantages:
1. The M3 was built to be competitive on the track, "out of the box", and will smoke many cars in the curves. It has a lot of potential for mods, including turbos and supercharger kits. VF Engineering just finished their S/C kit for the E46 M3, raising power from 333 hp (stock) to 480 hp. Torque comes up from 262 to 330 lb/ft. All that for $10K.
2. Bang for the buck:
MSRP for the 335i (300hp) is $40K.
Yahoo Autos has over 1,600 listings for '01-'06 M3's ranging in price from $24,900 to $61K. Get the $25K one, add a VF s/c, and you'll have a car that eats Porches for breakfast.

an 04'-05' M3 is way better than a 335i,if you really want a new car go with the 335i,if you want a car that has better performance go with the M3.

If you're looking at an 05 m3, you might consider a Porsche or an 06 Lotus Elise. Either is more of a true sports car and both haven't been run into the ground by posers!
