I want to go into a career where I can help schizophrenics, MPD, OCD and other mental disorders. What do I have to take in college? I live in Pennsylvania, so if you have any college suggestions, there you are.

You would want to be a psychiatrist, psychologist, mental health counselor, or therapist. Psychiatrist and Psychologist primarily help people with more severe disorders such as schizophrenia, all help OCD. You can major in psychology as an undergrad. to have any of the above careers. When you go further into your education (masters or ph.d.) then you will have to choose which of the tracks listed above you'll want to pursue.

You will need a Master's to actually work in the Psyc field. I would suggest becoming a School Psychologist... they work the same time that teachers do and get paid way more because they are Psychologist. I am pursuing my career in School Psychologist and you can work with many fascinating people. You will work with students with learning disorders (mental disorders) and it is a very rewarding career. Just type in School Psychology or School Psychologist into any search engine and you will get a lot of information. Hope I helped!

i think the best career for you is psychology. clinical psychology deals with what youre interested in. Also any college you go to your couselor is a life saver. At my college in FL they couselors [ for a basic AA] print out the courses you need to take to get the general education and the pre-reqs for the BS. also you can check out any school website and search majors there. www.collegeboard.com is a great place to:

1. get started with the SAT
2. find good colleges where majors are listed, cost and tuition, location, scholarships, etc.. its a good place to begin the college search.

Good luck to you. be warned though, you must receive a masters or PhD to actually make money with a career in psychology, so there are at least 7- 10 years of school, and if you want to percribe medication, you have to go to medical school as well get an MD. its a tough major. but I think its a great career.

i majored in social work in undergrad, and am currently getting my master's in social work right now (specializing in mental health). i am interning at a psych hospital right now, so i get some schizophrenic patients, borderline, major depressive, DID, but havent seen any ocd. if you take the social work route, i would HIGHLY suggest considering getting your masters degree. it not only opens more opportunities for jobs, but you'll make more money too. feel free to email me with any other questions jdoug002@umaryland.edu.
