I have used Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent for about 15 years and highly recommend it. If every household in the U.S. replaced just one bottle of 18 load petroleum based powder laundry detergent with our vegetable based product, we could save 93,200 barrels of oil, enough to heat and cool, 5,300 U.S. homes for a year! See - oil in many more things than our gas tanks!
* Non-toxic.
* Biodegradable
* No petroleum based cleaners
* No optical brighteners
* No phosphates
* No dyes or artificial fragrances
* No chlorine bleach
* No NTA or EDTA
* Safe for septic and greywater systems
The seventh generation laundry detergent works well on general cleaning. The whites do get a bit dingy after awhile but you can use OxyClean or hydrogen perioxide bleach to whiten them up again.
Buy from drugstore.com, gaiam.com or some grocery stores (Krogers in eastern US). Drugstore.com has a sale right now.
with free shipping! I'm gonna stock up right now.
PS....Please don't use Tide!

Depending on where you live, at P&C in rural Northern NY, they have Full Circle Eco-Friendly laundry detergent. It was $5.30 something, its for High Efficiency machines and it says it does 32 loads. They had lavender and a few other fragrances. I've been told its important it is biodegradable as some stay soapy even after being discharged as treated waste water.

I use Method cleaning products. They are eco-friendly, animal & people friendly, and they smell great. You can buy them at Target.
Method Laundry:
Our formulas are not only effective but also safe for people and the environment. method detergent is biodegradable, contains no phosphates and of course is never tested on animals
PETA:
December 14, 2006
method is proud to announce that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently named method cofounders, Eric Ryan and Adam Lowry as their 2006 "Persons of the Year".
PETA recognizes method's founders for "creating a trailblazing line of surface cleaners, soaps, home fragrances, and more that make it easy for caring consumers to choose products that haven't been tested by blinding rabbits and poisoning mice."
With more than a million members and supporters across the globe, PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world. method is proud to be acknowledged for its animal friendly business practices by the leading organization for animal rights.
P.S. Melaluca is good, but I couldn't stand the smell.

I make my own laundry and have for the past 5 years.
I started making it because I'm broke, & had skin reactions to the enzymes in commercial detergent.
I also had serious concerns about the environment.
Now it's all I use.
Homemade Detergent for Laundry
1 Box Borax (from the laundry aisle)
16 oz Baking Soda
1 t. Essential Oil (ie Peppermint, lavendar, etc)
Put it all in a clean, empty milk jug, shake well and use 3T. per load. On extra dirty workclothes, use up to 1/2 cup.

I use a machine called LaundryPure made by EcoQuest that hooks to my washer and completely eliminates the need for detergent, bleach or chemicals of any kind. It works great! my clothes come out fluffier and have absolutely no odor! It is great for my sensitive skin and for the environment too. I bought mine from a local dealer called Environmental Planning Solutions: cleanindoorair@optonline.net
You might want to contact them for more information...they are very helpful.

Eco-sense from Melaleuca is what you want. Go to www.melaleuca.com. I use the stuff and love it. It cleans well, clothes smell fresh but not perfumed, and you use just a fraction of what you would for Tide.
