My feelings are yes it should.
1- The student should be warned.
2- If the student continues to be disruptive they should be paddled in front of the class!
As Kids are very resilient they would get over it. By doing it in front of the rest of the class, otherwould be troublemakers might be dettered. I remember back in the day, we had teachers who paddled and those who didn't. Those who did, used it maybe five times during the year. Those who didn't, well their classes reminded me of the zoo.

Medic_13 it is hard to say what hurt worse the stinging in ones bottom or the laughter ringing in ones ears but the message came through loud and clear, this was unacceptable behavior and it was time to mend ones ways.

Corey: Ga. Southern Univ. Accounting. I'm glad to here that controlling the classroom is not a problem. When I asked the question: Are Teachers underpaid 7 of the 8 respondents went on and on about how hard it was to maintain control. Seems I keep getting conflicting information.

Well, the answer is, you can never make a kid do better by making him/her feel worse. Cruelty does nothing to motivate a child--just makes him/her angrier, more defiant, etc.
I can't believe that humiliating a child in front of his/her peers would be your idea of effective discipline.
There are SOO many options between cruelty and "zoo-like classes". Thank goodness there are humanitarian teachers out there every day who handle discipline in a kind, firm manner and that is is Illegal to paddle in n.america at least.

I do not think the paddle has any place in the classroom. I do not believe the problems we are seeing with the youth today are related in any way to the paddle not being in the classroom.
A good teacher can control the classroom without the use of fear, intimidation and force. I attended school in a very rough area and I currently volunteer in an inner city school. There are alot of children society would view as troubled there but with respect and proper disicipline they can do well. (Not force and humiliation--they see that enough in real life)
There are teachers who can handle the kids and those who can not. The paddle would not help those who can not.

Well as my pappy use to say. A belt across your bottom will make you think twice before doing it again. We are only 20 years late. Not only in school but at home as well Kids today have no respect for their elders. No manners and could care less about what anyone thinks. Thanks to Dr, Spock and the Government our kids have turned into trash, punks and hoodlums. This is not saying all kids are bad, but the ones that are turn out a lot better after a good whipping. In other country's you wont find kids acting like the ones here, because they get their little bottoms blistered if they do. Some kids will do the right thing with the threat being there, it's the fastest form of correction. .

I think you are so right, about bringing the paddle back.
#1 is good, but number 2, I don`t know. Maybe not in front of the class. You should take him in a room, privatly, and paddle him. Then, talk about it to the person, to make sure they know why they got paddled, and stuff like that

Not unless it's an outdoor class in canoe skills.
There are better ways to motivate children than by fear, or physical pain. It would be much more effective if students were simply kicked out of class if they don't behave. They can perform a community service project to earn their way back in, or they can stay out and totally mess up their chances of graduating.

In my elementary school, only the principal could spank kids with a wooden paddle that was prominently displayed on his wall. I think this worked quite well. Everyone new what was happenening when someone got sent to the principals for "discipline," but they weren't necessarily embarresed in front of their friends. It seemed to work quite well.

From a teacher.
One who doesn't need a weapon to control his classroom
