I am aware that ( in the UK ) the state of 'common law wife' means nothing. I am not married to my partner but I wonder if it is worthwhile to tie the knot.

We share deeds on our house, we have a son and we both have life insurance. However, I am not his legal 'next of kin' and he isn't mine. Plus, neither of us have a will.

Does any one know if it is stupid to go through life not bothering to marry, only to be schtupped by the law?

I think that if you make a will naming everything to each other and then to your son cannot see any reason to tie the knot. When doing your will you can also grant power of attorney for both financial and medical reasons to each other
