I think it's mainly because they all had the common desire to be free from the tyranny and non-representative rule of England, despite their many difference.

In the late 1700s, when the country first started, the states did seem to act more like individual nations, which is why they later switched from The Articles of Confederation to The Constitution (which we still have now), which I think gave the federal government more control basically.

Even during the Revolution, many of the colonies didn't get along very well. For example, Georgia and South Carolina refused to ratify the Declaration of Independence at first, because it originally had an anti-slavery clause in it. But ultimately, the colonies all hated the British more than they hated each other.

Because they were all against Britians rule, and wanted to prove they were indepenednt.
