Yes, it happens all the time! A glass cover will help reduce evaporation, but won't stop it completely. Also, if you use a glass cover it keeps fish from jumping out of your tank, but if you use aquarium lights, it may cause the water temperature to rise, so you have to keep an eye on this.

All you need to do is keep a gallon jug or two of water on hand and top off you tank as necessary. Chances are you won't be using that much water if you top off every 2-3 days, so you can let the water sit to drive off any chlorine. If you use aquarium salt, don't add any to the water you use to top off, because the salt doesn't evaporate and you'll be raising the concentration every time you fill up.

Winter, summer spring and fall, water evaporates. Allow the water to evaporate it isn't going to hurt your tank or your fish. Actually with the water a bit lower, more Dissolved Oxygen gets into your tank from your filter.

In the dryer months, a water change once a week or every two weeks is sufficient. you don't have to worry about TOPPING off the tank. Unless you just don't like the way it looks.

I have a rather large saltwater tank and I'd like to know who ever said salt water doesn't evaporate quickly I'd like to beat them. I loose about 5 gallons of salt water per week. Since I have a number of salt tanks I just mix up a new batch and add it to the tank. I don't like the look of the water line either. I do the same with the fresh water tanks.

Either way it won't hurt your fish.

YES! water evaporates from fish tanks. If you heat the water, and you warm your home, evaporation will quicken..If you feel that the water level is dropping too quickly ,check this:
Leaks-from the tank itself or from the filters. Hope you do water changes and filter maintenance regularly.
Leave the top slightly open so unwanted gasses that build up can also evaporate. You can top off (add water) every few days with fresh water, but do not add any salt unless you do a 20 % water change and require salt. Only water and gas evaporate, the chemicals (ammonia, etc.) do not.Air ppumps and filters also hasten the rate of evaporation. This is all normal.

Yes water does evaporate from the tank. Each week you should change a few gallons of water from the tank and top it off

Yes, leave the top open because the air needs to be exchanged. You need to constatly top off the tank with fresh water to make up for evaporation.

Yes your tank will have evaporation. It will have more evaporation if you are using something that makes bubbles and puts air in the water. The best thing to do is just add water.

As long as there is water there will always be evaporation. Always leave a hole on the top for oxygen to get in the water and for CO2 to gas off. But as long as you do your weekly water changes, you won't really notice evaporation anyway.

sure--
the water will go down faster in a house that has a higher temp. but will put moisture in the air for you. which is good.
your water will stay at a more stable level with a flouresent light than an incandesent light which puts out more heat, but cost about twice as much. if you have a light that also heats- leave it off during the day.
as a former of a pet shop owner,i used to add about 20 gals. of water a day between all my tanks-- with cooler flu. lights.

lol yes. Water evaporates, especially in dry climates or movement of air. I live in a very dry area, so often I have to add more water.

Just find water that is the right temperature (your tap should be okay) and add any other products to it to match the rest of your tank. Make sure temp and pH, etc are similar to the rest of the water: stress kills fish!
