I remember one of the 49ers player, Thomas Herrion died of heart problem after an exhibition game against Denver, but Corey Stringer died when he was in tranning camp and the weather was pretty hot.

In the NFL, there is one case WR Chuck Hughes of the Detroit Lions died on the field in 1971. He had an unknown heart problem, he collapsed on the field after being tackled. He died on the field without ever regaining consciousness.

There was once an AFL player (Arena League not American League) a couple of years ago who died on the field. I believe the situation was something like he ran head first into another player and something funny happened in his neck. I read about this in Sports Illustrated and I will try to find his name.

It happens at least once per year. Sometimes it's during the summer due to heat exhaustion, sometimes a broken neck or the like. Football is dangerous, but that wouldn't stop me. It's less dangerous than, say, riding motorcycles. Be advised, however, that football and boxing can both cause brain damage due to the impact of the brain against the skull.
