Advertising is a very broad field, and there are many opportunities in this area. The first division to know about is "agency" or "client" side. Ad agencies create much of the advertising that runs in the USA, but certainly not all of it. Some "client" companies have their own an people who work inside the firm and create advertising. Those who work for the client tend to be "generalists" who may write the ads, produce them, and in general, are jack-of-all-trades in advertising.
People who work in ad agencies tend to be more specialized. There are account managers (who plan the strategy), copywriters, who write words, and art people, who handle visuals. (There are many more, but I'll keep this short.)
If you want to get into advertising, you need to show your commitment by going to college and studying the field. While you are in college, it is good to work in the field so you can practice what you want to be. Many ad agencies will hire interns (often unpaid). This is a great opportunity to learn. Don't worry about the money for now. Just get in the door and learn as much as you can. That experience will give you a good overview on the field and let you see just what aspect of advertising appeal to you most.
Good luck.
