Because embryo development occurs very similarly across various taxa. For example, bats and human beings look very different, but they are both mammals. Although bats end up with wings and very differently shaped bodies, both human and bat embryos form rather similarly at the beginning, and in terms of the order of development. This confirms that bat wings and human arms are evolutionarily related.
