Does any modern day country practice what the British used to do (for definition, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penal_colony ). Just curious because many people, as a response to the question of what do do with criminals, respond 'put them on an island' as a solution.

I believe the last one was Devils Island run by France off the coast of French Guiana.The concept ended when the great european empires declined and they ran out of places to send their unwanted criminals and political prisoners

I recently heard that there currently exists only one penal colony. I don't remember any other details so I am having trouble doing a web search.

Yes. Except for optimum control and security these are open air prisons in sectors in country. Places no one really wants to go to. Fantastic, isn't it? That evil has so excercised itself to such a level! Here, and every other country besides.
