my girlfriend just started taking Yaz about 9 days ago and has had her period for about 8 days... at first it was normal and about 3 - 4 days in it stopped for a few hours then came back slowly...now it is day 8 and she is still only at the point where she has to replace her tampon about once a day...keep in mind these are super plus tampons... is this a possible reaction to the pill? has it happened to anyone else out there?/?

Spotting is very common when beginning a low-dose birth control pill. Yaz is about the lowest on the market. She could spot for a month or so before things settle down. When I started the low-dose, I spotted for three weeks, then had no spotting at all on the week my period was supposed to show up. After that, the spotting showed up again. It eventually settled out in the second month. The spotting just gradually dwindled off until it was finally gone and my regular cycle kicked in. She needs to replace the tampon more often than once a day. She could contract Toxic Shock and you don't want to deal with that. Instead of using one super plus tampon, she needs to use a smaller absorbency like juniors and replace it as needed.

If she hasn't taken birth control before, her body could be adjusting to the hormones in the pills. It is normal to have a period after starting birth control, that may last longer than expected. I would advise her that if she began to have severe cramping, to see her gynecologist. Otherwise, I think she will be fine.
