I currently work at Old Navy, and the managers have a habit of dumping me in the fitting room, where the constant interaction with customers is tiring me. I understand retail isn't exactly designed for the introverted, but I needed a job, and everywhere else I looked it was the same: "Looking for OUTGOING, PEOPLE-ORIENTED candidates with EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS and GREAT COMMUNICATION ABILITY."
Everywhere I look, companies are hiring based on traits I lack (verbal communication skills, persuasiveness, perkiness) rather than any of my strengths (written communication ability, creativity, task focus). What I'm basically asking is, are there any part-time jobs out there for smart, shy people? Or are we out of luck until the distant future, when we're all out of college? And if there are any jobs for me, how would I go about finding them?

You could try working at a call center type job where you talk over the phone. That way, you don't see the person you are talking with.
Or, you could try FedEx/UPS but it is physically tiring.
Creative jobs? I don't really know unles you work for yourself and sell things on Ebay or on your own website.

Yeah, try to get over being shy....it's only you that it hurts really. I was the same at your age and I'll tell you if you don't snap out of it, you'll get taken advantage of time and time again no matter what job you're in.
I'm a teacher and my first year I was so shy, but still friendly. Anyway, other people pick up on this really quick and they start asking you to do stuff for them, because they know you'll be the nice girl. So, you end up doing all this extra work and noone does anything for you in return, because you're shy and you won't ever say anything (and they know it).
Even if you do a job that doesn't require a lot of social interaction, you need to get over being shy....I know it's hard but it's true, otherwise people will usually take advantage of you.
Like if you get a great office job requiring minimal social skills for example, and your doing all the work and really good at it. Some outgoing girl with great communication skills, will come in and steal your promotion by brown nosing and schmoozing the boss and taking credit for your work.....sad but true I'm afraid.
Don't be shy darling, this is YOUR chance to shine....Go Get Umm!!

Unfortunately, customer service is pervasive in almost all careers today. I know you are just looking for part time work, but eventually you are going to be looking for a career. Better to learn those skills now than at a *real* job ;). Don't think that once you are "out of college" that there are a wealth of positions that require no human contact. Unless, of course, you are looking for a career in data entry or assembly line manufacturing.... and even then, you are expected to communicate with managers, co-workers, etc.
Not everyone has to be the bubbly, happy, outgoing one (that would get annoying), but you will need to work on those pesky verbal skills.
Good luck!

Young lady, that was one of the best-written and clearest posts I've seen at Yahoo! answers.
There's definitely a place for someone with your skills in the business world. Here's my suggestion. Go to a temp agency and have them send you out to do clerical type work. You'll be getting some experience in different areas, which will be beneficial. And the chances are that one of the places you work will be impressed enough to offer you permanent employment.
Best of luck to you.

Best job field for someone your age is in the restaurant or bar business. Start out as a bus boy or bar back somewhere. If you work at a bar you will most likely work at hour where you're not in school. Hope this helps.

Those skills are not hard to learn. If you are really smart you should take an attempt to develop those skills.
For the skills you have mentioned, try some technical writing related work.

You need to force yourself not to be shy. I had the same problems and had to change. You can do it if you really put your mind to it. Don't worry about what other people think, relax and be yourself. You might surprise yourself :-)
