I want to build using the AM2 platform. Should i go with with the FX-60, or should I wait till the price lowers and get an X2 series processor? I realistically would only like to spend around $200, MAYBE $250. But if i get a huge performance gain using one over another, maybe it might be worth the extra money.

It matters what you are trying to do. For gaming, it's NOT usually the cpu, it's the graphics card that is the most important. Here's a place for benchmarks (charts) for cpus and video cards.

Go with AM2 which uses DDR2 ram since the FX-60 uses DDR ram which is becoming harder to find. That is unless you get a great deal on an FX-60 and can also purchase compatable DDR400 ram at the same time .
I had the same decision a couple of months ago and ended up getting an FX-55 for $130.00 at NewEgg and OCZ DDR400 ram. If not for great price on FX-55 I would have gone with AM2 CPU.
And here is a good article comparing AM2 and socket939 platforms. AMD has X2 processors for both sockets.

Interesting to note that DDR2 is not that big an increase in performance over DDR ram (at least for AMD processors) until you hit the much higher priced CPU's and RAM.

The FX-60 is a socket 939, not an AM2. I would get one of the dual core X2's. Whichever is affordable for your AM2 board.

once you're fairly into ultimate overclocking FX CPU is a choics yet in case you meant to do known gaming etc. etc. Get an Intel center 2 CPU a twin center will cope with maximum of your video games, the GPU is the most important function for the portraits aspect. what's the point of having overpriced CPU once you don't want it?
