Cricket is a bat and ball sport, played between two teams of eleven players each. A cricket match is played on a grass field (which is usually roughly oval), in the centre of which is a flat strip of ground 22 yards (20.12 m) long, called a pitch. At each end of the pitch is a set of three parallel wooden stakes (known as stumps) driven into the ground, with two small crosspieces (known as bails) laid on top of them. This wooden structure is called a wicket. A player from the fielding team (the bowler) bowls a hard, fist-sized cork-centred leather ball from one wicket towards the other. The ball usually bounces once before reaching a player from the opposing team (the batsman), who defends the wicket from the ball with a wooden cricket bat. The batsman, if he or she does not get out, may then run between the wickets, exchanging ends with the other batsman (the "non-striker"), who has been standing in an inactive role near the bowler's wicket, to score runs. The other members of the bowler's team stand in various positions around the field as fielders. The match is won by the team that scores more runs.
Cricket has been an established team sport for hundreds of years. It originated in its modern form in England and is popular mainly in the present and former members of the Commonwealth. In the countries of South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, cricket is the most popular sport. It is also a major sport in places such as England and Wales, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Bermuda, and the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean, which are collectively known in cricketing parlance as the West Indies. There are also well established amateur club competitions in countries as diverse as the Netherlands, Kenya, Nepal and Argentina, among others; there are over one hundred cricket playing nations recognised by the International Cricket Council.
The sport is followed with passion in many different parts of the world. It has even occasionally given rise to diplomatic outrage, the most notorious being the Basil D'Oliveira affair which led to the banning of South Africa from sporting events. Other examples include the Bodyline series played between England and Australia in the early 1930s, or the 1981 underarm bowling incident involving Australia and New Zealand.

Well from your avatar i can tell you are probably a blonde So i'll be simple Cricket is a game played by British (England) with other countries who were thier Colonies (countries that were under the controll of England back then) It requires a Batsman(a person with the BAT (not the animal) but a wooden bat). The Bowler ( the man the ball, not a bowl) runs down then pitch (not your voice's Pitch but a hard soil that is good for bouncing the ball) So the Bowler thorws the ball towars the batsmen and the batsmen scores runs ( meaning points) by hitting the ball towards the boundry (which is a rope encircling the ground) if he hits it and the ball reaches teh boundry its called 4 runs (meaning 4 points) if he hits a homerun type of shot it is 6 runs (meaning 6 points). To get the Batsmen OUT (meaning 3 strikes) the bowler must throw the ball to his wickets ( 3 wooden sticks standing behind the batsmen) if he hits them the batsmen is out. there are other ways of getting a batsmen out. By cating a run out and LBW etc. I hope you got it by now or perhaps a slight hint of what cricket is about Try watching clips online. This is how i learned Soccer.

You wana know about cricket right.
Some of the people above has written about the whole thing about cricket. To be frank there is not much to write right now.
But this is something that I think they haven't written yet.
Unlike any other sport Cricket is a game of 'CHARACTER'.
In this game you cannot be 'pumped up' during the full length of the game. But you have to give your 100% during every single ball. What I meant was that Cricket is a long and tiring game. Its shorter version that is ODI is of 100 overs that is 6hrs and you can't be pumped up for this long isn't it. And about giving your 100%, you get only one chance to bat unlike baseball where you have a few more.
You have to make use of this opportunity, and one ball is all that is needed to get you out.
While you are fielding you have to be alert because as the saying goes 'Catches win Matches', and you can save as many runs as you can with a little alertness and agility.
In cricket you concentration level has to be 100% and you have to be that much patient too and have to adapt to the situation of the game.
And last but not the least
Cricket is a way of life, where as in life until stumps are drawn you have every opportunity to fight back and win.

cricket is a sport. it is played on a hard rolled pitch in the middle of a large field.
the bowler, bowls the ball to the batter, bouncing it on the ground before him. he is aiming for the wickets, three sticks behind the batter. his aim is to get the batter out so that he can't make runs. he can get the batter out by hitting the wickets, hitting the batter's leg when it is infront of the wicket, or by the batter hitting the ball and a fieldsman catching the ball.
the batsmen score runs, by hitting the ball, and running between the wickets (at either end of the pitch), when he gets to the other end of the pitch he scores one run. when he runs there an back he scores two etc. if he hits it to the boundary of the field without the ball touching the ground, he scores 6 runs, when he hits the ball to the boundary with it bouncing, he scores 4 runs.
there is always one batter at either end of the pitch. there are eleven players in a team.
the team who scores the most runs wins.

I think you should better watch a match between India and Srilanka being played now and shown in Doordarsan National Channel. If you don't understand the game / sport, don't worry, you will definitely understand why India loose.
