I would like to say the popular vote but that makes me kind of squeamish. I hesitate because of the number of people that will pick one issue and vote for someone based on their stated position on that issue. They do not consider what is best for the country overall, just one issue. For instance abortion, same sex marriage or stem cell research.
For that reason we should still use the electoral college.

In order to change to a popular vote, we would need a new constitution. The USA is a REPUBLIC, NOT A DEMOCRACY. Nowhere in the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence is democracy mentioned.
The Founding Fathers had it right, they were concerned with liberty, not democracy. If popular votes were used, less-populated states would be at the mercy of a few highly-populated states. With the electoral college, all states have a representative voice.
Example: The first amendment is inherently non-democratic. It lets the minority have a voice in spite of the majority opinion.
A republic protects liberty, democracy silences the minority voices.

Definately the electoral college. If we went to popular vote, only those in highly populated areas would receive any benefit from a particular candidate. The candidates would be more likely to help those in a highly populated area.

I think the electoral college works well because the candidates running for the presidency have to be more strategic about where they do their campaigning. It ensures that the smartest candidate will win, unless one candidate's brother happens to be the governor of Florida.
It won't make a difference in '08, Barack Obama is obviously the best man for the job. The man has no faults.

Electoral college...That way the small states still have a say in who becomes president.
Otherwise, the large population centers determine who becomes president and the small population centers(where most of the food is from) have almost no say.

I think we should use popular vote. Becausw ith electoral vote, not everyone has a say in it. It feels pointless to vote for the prez.
