I think it's Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia. I still can't believe he didn't win the academy award that year.

O'Toole's performance definitely deserved the Oscar. But so did Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird (who won the Oscar that year). I think the fact that Lawrence of Arabia won so many awards actually hurt O'Toole's chances, and ensured Peck the Oscar.

Tom Hanks in Philadelphia was probably the best performance I have seen.
