Looking at getting a tank between 50 to 70 gal.
I would like for it to get along with other sharks or fish, but one that can eat small fish. I do not want to get in over my head, so even research suggestions would be helpful.

Redtail or rainbow shark, both should be kept as the only one of their species. Balas get much too big for a 70 gallon tank.

Not many to chose from. Tri-colour sharks(not a true shark-no teeth) are nice and grow to a large size. Live food is not necessary, so pellet food, flakes, frozen brine or blood worms are ideal. Really, this is a large community type fish that can be kept with large tinfoil barbs, silver dollars etc. 5-fin sharks are also fresh water and grow large, although they require brackish conditions and will make a meal out of smaller fish. Good Luck!

Are you sure you want one that can eat small fish? Some sharks don't eat meat.

Red tail sharks are usually peaceful and will keep to themselves as long as you only have one of them. I have one in a tank with mollies and swordtails.

Just keep one in its own tank... Not sure if they are compatible with any other fish.
