I am only answering because I share your pain!

Let's see. I start by rewriting each paranthetical in descending order of the variable.
- 8m ^2 +2m -3 combined with (plus)
+1m ^2 +5m 0
_________________________
-7m ^2 +7 -3

And the second:
+8y^2 +2 combined with (plus)
-3y^2 +5
____________

+5y^2 +7

BUT I sure do hope a math person comes along...
