On this type engine, the points should have two mounting screws. One screw inserts into an elongated slot on the point plate, and the other is the locking screw. I have found this to be true on all engines with point/condenser ignition systems (heavy duty gasoline engines) and coil/distributor ignitions on small engines (50 HP and less).

To set points, ensure that no power is applied to the coil, the breaker points are riding on the high of the rotor cam (center shaft of the distributor), and with a "feeler" Gage, inserted between the breaker points, turn the adjusting screw until the proper clearance is obtained (slight resistance when removing the feeler Gage). Once the clearance is obtained, tighten the second or locking screw to lock the points in place.

Return power to the coil, reinstall the cap, check to ensure proper firing order, and you should be good to go.

ignition points? try a new cap and rotor, be easy when taking the coil off of the cap you can bend the little tab on the cap slightly but not recommended. plug points? there's a little round gap guage for that available at any auto parts store and they can tell you how much.
