On this site people with pregnant dogs are jumped upon and told its their obligation to have them spayed or neutered but when a cat is in heat they say get a male or get her what she wants. What is the difference? There are just as many unwanted cats in the world as dogs.I tell them both the same. I don't get it.

I couldn't agree with you more. There's a double standard. Not as many cat owners take their cats to the vets as dog owners. People will lets their cats wander the neighborhood freely and think it's perfectly fine, but god forbid should my dog cross the property line or even be off a leash in my own yard. Then they get mad when I let my dog out and it attacks their cat in MY yard! I think the rules that apply for dogs should go for cats as well. Let's end the discrimination between species!

They both should be told the same. There is a terrible cat overpopulation problem too.

Interestingly, some of the times I've pointed out the importance of spay/neuter to some cat posters, they've flagged my messages as Spam and they were deleted by Yahoo. So, the answers you see posted in response to a question may not necessarily be ALL the answers the questioner received - you may just be seeing the responses the questioner wanted to hear.

Honestly, if I found a pregnant cat in a stage of pregnancy that was early enough to still get her spayed, I'd get her spayed. (I had my feral cat spayed while she was pregnant - she would have had 5 kittens if I hadn't done it). Better that than to have her go through having the kittens - each kitten born and adopted usually means one already born in a shelter who gets put to death.

I totally agree with you...but I've seen people tell the same to cat owners on here also. One thing that makes me mad is something like my situation: I found a stray female cat about 2 weeks ago. When I took her to the vet he believed she may already be pregnant (due to a swollen belly) but won't be able to tell for sure until this Friday. He told me he could spay her now (if she was pregnant it would kill the kittens). I can't see murdering any animal or person...so does it make me a worse person to keep all the kittens and/or adopt them out (adding to the pet population)?

Cat owners should also get them spayed or neutered! There are huge numbers of cats euthanized every year, just like dogs.

I agree with you!

I agree whole heartily they both need to be fixed, unless it is a show/breed animal and you actually plan to do shows. It's sad how many unwanted animals have to be put down because no one took the time to fix the parents.

There is no difference, they should all be spayed/neutered.
