Here are the formulae:

X + Y = -23
X + (-Y) = 3 or X - Y = 3 or X = 3+Y
Subtituting this value for X into the first equation we get
3 + Y + Y = -23
2Y = -20
Y = -10
Therefore X = -13

X + Y = -10 + -13 = -23
-X + Y = 10 + -13 = -3

you can use linear combinations to solve this problem.

x + y=-23
randomly, i will use the opposite of x
-x+y=-3

x + y=-23
-x+y=-3
---------------
2y=-26
y=-13

x-13=-23
x=-10

so you can have:

-10 + (-13) = -23
10 + (-13) = -3
