No, it doesn't "protect".
It's used to tighten up your internal organs to keep them from shaking around.
Stand up and suck in your gut as hard as you can. All of your internal organs (kidney, liver, etc) get compressed into a tight area. Now they have no where to go and won't bounce around when you jump up and down.

Well... Yeah , impact protection i suppose. Actually , it's more used by moto-cross riders, and besides impact protection , the overall snugness in the belt area helps to keep the kidneys more secure from all that jostling around that moto-cross deals with , ..LoL! Hardly something to worry about on a moped , ..unless you're a pretty aggresive Moped'er. Never heard of the "Protection from Cold Air" advantage..

It doesn't "protect" you per se, it helps support your back and aids with good posture. Not just for motocross either; I find one to be very useful for extended touring as well.
