Hank Snow hit #1 with it 1962. Geoffrey Mack wrote it. The most familiar version now is by Johnny Cash, and it's on his 1996 album Unchained.
Lucky Starr made it a hit in Australia -- it hit #1 in Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide and #2 in Melbourne.
Geoff Mack rewrote the tune for Hank Snow. He also wrote the versions for the New Zealand and British markets that Starr recorded.

According to Wikepedia, a singer by the name of Lucky Star made it popular in 1962, and Hank Snow took it to #1 on the country charts in Nov 62. The one I grew up on was Lynn Anderson's version, but I like Johnny Cash's version too. Great song.

To me it's the same as "God works in mysterious ways" or "Who are we to question God's will?" It's the end all answer when they don't have a real intelligent answer. And it IS the same thing. Belief in God creating the world is the same idea as belief in Gaia, or Mother Earth. I don't see how it would be cruel, except for the fact that *most* Christians are whiney. Oh, they can go around wearing their crosses and blessing everyone left and right, but if I wear my pentagram and say, "Goddess Bless you"....... Freedom of religion my a$$. :)
