Well, you never know. But at the moment it seems highly doubtful. The term football for American football has been so embedded into our lifestyle and culture here, that it would take a LONG time for EVERYONE to start calling it football. But I wish also that we called it football because honestly, it makes a whole lot more sense!

No way. The best you can hope for is Americans calling soccer by its Spanish word: futbol (with an accent).
I can imagine the NFL and college football copyrighting the word "football" in America to prevent soccer from using it. Or I can see all the marketing campaigns to prevent people calling soccer "football".
I think we should all hope soccer can succeed in America rather than getting people to say football.

Gav (the first answerer) is almost correct, people in England and the rest of the world were calling Football Soccer long before the Americans 'bastardised' it, as many people claim. The only fact Gav's gotten wrong is that Rugby was invented before Football/Soccer. Rugby came about because a boy at Rugby school decided to pick up the football during a normal football game - apparently inspired by the Gaelic game of Caid - and others liked the idea so drew up rules. Rugby's official name is actually Rugby Football.

"doubt it", good answer...
Anyways, I don't think that America will do this. The history of FOOTBALL or "American Football" has it's place here and will not go anywhere. It's really weird to hear David Beckham say "soccer" thought in an american interview. It's just something you're going to have to live with. ;)

not a chance in hell. we've been calling soccer soccer and football football for 140 years now, and that's not going to change. the united states of america will not be bullied into changing the name of our favorite sport. it's football. not american football, just football, and that's the way it's going to stay. if the rest of the world wants to call soccer football and football 'american football', that's fine, no problem. we don't care what everyone else calls it, but it pisses us off when foreigners try to tell us what we should call our sports.
