Internet explorer 7, now has phising checker on it. Phishing is a site that is made to look like a legitimate site, but is not. You can set IE7 to check automatically, but this slows page loading because it checks the page against Microsoft's data base. You can also right click the Exclamation icon at the bottom right of your browser, and check any suspected page on demand.

Also, if you see a padlock down there, that is used to verify pages using a third party verification company, such as verisign. This company installs a certificate on your computer, and one on the hosts server, then verifies the information independently, using the certificate installed by the trusted site. Always hit the padlock symbol, and verify the page before entering your numbers. Always, sign out of a site, as opposed to just closing the page as well.

I would also get into the habit of changing your pin number and passwords on a regular basis. You could rotate two or three of them over the year.

Never give a pin number, or any numbers or passwords from your debit card to anyone.

Never give out your SS# for any reason. And use a credit card instead, it may offer better fraud protection - you don't want someone just emptying your bank account.
