The country's name is "Ukraine".

When the USSR absorbed Ukraine, Russia called it "the Ukraine" to try to take away the patriotic and nationalistic view of the Ukrainian people. By referring to the country as "the Ukraine", to showed that Russia considered it a region of Russia proper, and not an independent republic under the "union" (USSR - Union of Soviet Socialist Republics).

Russia has long wanted to absorb Ukraine into it's formal structure, and make it a region of Russia.

It's just Ukraine. I was watching Jeopardy! and Alex didn't count anyone who put "The" in their answer because it is incorrect.
