We think so. We have five goldfish that we got at walmart for 20 cents and they are now anywhere from 5 to 8 inches. They were maybe an inch and a half when we got them. But there are so many different kinds out there. Another type that is good is freshwater fish. Mollys, platys, guppies, bala sharks, there a lot that go together. But one thing I will tell you is that unless you have a GOOD filter system, and I mean REALLY GOOD, you can not put goldfish in with other freshwater fish. They have a natural body slime that can get into the gills of the other fish and suffoate them. Also goldfish are cold water fish. The others I listed are classified as tropicals so they need a warmer climate.

Mostly yes. SOme species are more fun. Large cichlids are interesting because of their aggressive personalities, they redecorate the tank and they recognize people. Female bettas are interesting because they form a wolf-pack type hierarchy where you can watch the dominant female enforce tank laws and keep the peace. Loaches are interesting because they swim so crazy around the tank. Each species has something interesting about them.

I think they are. They offer so many different options and possiblities. Each species is just a little different from the next and looking at all of the one's we frequently keep and breed there is something new to learn every time we look at them.

Yes.

Lots of variety (I have a community marine tank) and the fish do have little personalities. Very fascinating and soothing to watch.

Yes and watching them helps reduce your blood pressure and reduces stress. Plus for the most part, they are low maintenance.
