Your question is a little confusing. Let's clear it up a little.
Hawaii is the only U.S. state that is an island group (Hawaiian Islands). There is not a state that is just one island.
Puerto Rico is a single island, but it is a territory, not a state.
Then, there are Guam, Marshall Islands, some of the Virgin Islands, Caroline Islands, Wake Island, Midway Islands, and Mariana Islands. These all belong to the United States. But, none of them are states. Also, the Hawaiian Ridge stretches from the Hawaiian Islands to the Midway Islands.
And yes, New York and Rhode Island have islands. But, they themselves are not islands. Lots of U.S. states have islands; some have many.

There is no answer to that, for Hawaii is composed by several islands. And we can't count Puerto Rico, because it is not a state of the USA but a protectorate. And you can´t count Rhode Island, because it is NOT an island.
