Do you know what the difference is between an English garden and an Italian garden? I am looking for serious answers, even though I know what to expect ;-)

Thanks! :-)

Well...there are a couple of different types of each.

an italian garden is usually formal, with symmetrical plantings. they tried to incorporate the surroundings and make full use of adjacent landscapes. Usually there is some kind of "playful" feature, most likely incorporating water.

The english garden is a copy of sorts of the italian garden, since the king of the time visited italy and liked what he saw, so he took back ideas and several people to help him reconstruct what he saw in italy.

the english formal garden, is well...formal. It's made up of neatly trimmed and pruned shrubs and plants of strong structural accent. you'll find a lot of symmetry, usually with one main path and a few tertiary paths that come off of it.

the english perrenial garden is loose and planted with a lot of colorful perrenials. it usually looks unkept, because of its fullness.

For the English garden, I think of boxwoods that are pruned to be very formal. But then you also have the English cottage garden, which has lots of crowded flowers. I think the purpose of the crowding is that it keeps the weeds down.

I would think (but am not positive) that and Italian garden would have lots of Mediterranean herbs.
