How do you want it "restored" (It's also called an image).

Your computer should have come with a restore disk (or a set of restore disks). If you never got them or if you cant find them, you will need to obtain a set of disks that were made for your specific model of computer. However, the restore disk(s) are only necessary if you want your computer to "look and feel" the same way it did when it was brand new from Sony.

However, If you don't care about the SONY look and feel, then you can just install Windows from a retail copy of Windows. Just make sure that you have copies of all of your device drivers (and your applications) ready to go.

It depends on what you want to do with the computer. You have a few options.

Do you know what Operating System you are going to put on the system; Such as Windows, Linux, etc.

The easiest way is to take an install disk for one of these O/Ses, put it in the drive, reboot, and boot from the disk. There will be an option to format the disk drive and make a fresh clean install on the drive with the chosen OS. Once you have the OS installed, you can put your files back onto the PC.

Do realize that by formatting you are completely wiping the disk drive of all of its information.

Put the windows CD in the drive and reboot the machine - then press a key to boot from disk and do a fresh installation by following the on screen instructions.

You will need the restore CDs or DVDs from issued by Sony.

There may be a utilty in the Start Menu that creates them if they did not come with the PC.

To begin, you don't need to reinstall your OS. Simply go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore and choose a date from when you purchased your computer. This will save you the time of reinstalling your OS.

How did you backup?

Usually if with a program, the same one you used to backup will have a restore function.

If you did this manually, you will have to manually "restore" them, meaning copying them over the same way you sent them to the backup drive.
