I can't think of any famous guitarists with stickers on their guitars before Green Day came along. Now pretty much every band and kid does it. I'm sure people did do it before Green Day became popular, but was it widely popular?

i think it was popular because people must have liked to make their guitars their own, just like they do now. it just took billie to make it widely "popular"
