Trey Parker does the voice. He had to change the way he does the voice because it was ruining his vocal chords. He went to a vocal coach and found a better way to get nearly the same sound.

Trey Parker, one of the two creators [the other is Matt Stone] has always done it. I never noticed it changed . . maybe their recording devices got less scratchy ?

The creators actually decided to make Cartman sound a bit more southern.

Lucky B's explanation sounds correct, too. That makes a lot of sense.

it is one of the creators. sometimes character voices change when too much strain is brought on in the actors voice. either that or they use effects to make the noise sound better. although i would go with the former.

Hooray! finally a question about South park. They changed his voice with another person playing Cartman. I don't know who it was or who it is now.
